this is a new site i've become involved in, called shades of me. it comes to me by way of bitchfest...you know, that board that serves no purpose on the net, and is only posted to by hags who have nothing better to do than to hurt others. right. anyway, i wanted to thank evil edna for drawing our attention to this site, as it is a great way to get the word out about cancer prevention. so go to the site, and look around, ok? ~anyway~ hey all, how goes it? just a little note to remind everyone that my sight may be down for a while tonight, as i will be working on my new layout design, which is being finished up by cortney as we speak. this layout is so kick-ass, to say i'm excited is a fucking understatement. also, a note to my good friend mis: i know i had emailed you asking about designing a layout for me, but before that, unbeknownst to me at the time, my friend cortney had already started plans for a new layout design for me. i appreciate you wanting to help, though! and hey all, my first real layout here at diaryland was designed by mis (it was a layout that i really liked, by the way!), and she did a kick-ass job! she now has an addition to her site up, and does custom templates, completely free of charge. if any of you are interested, go here. i can guarantee you, if you those of you who are looking for a new template check out mis's designs, you won't leave her site disappointed!
another thing...a good friend of mine, alice, pointed out on my tagboard that the proana diaries of diaryland out there shouldn't be banned, because it would be a violation of their freedom of speech rights. i do have to admit, i'm a big advocate of freedom of speech, but not when it's promoting a death sentence among young kids. now i know some are going to say i'm a hypocrite for saying that...but when you think about it, even the strongest beliefs have their limits, and even the strongest activist - no matter what their cause - draws a line in the sand at some point, a line that says what they will and will not accept within that belief. what i'm getting at is that these diaries are fine, if in fact they are promoting healing, and not death. i feel it is fine to talk about any kind of self-destruction or abuse, if in fact that journal is used as a healing tool, and not as a way to further their disease, and the disease of another. and many of these proana sites are doing just that. like i've said before, though - if you'd like to do your own research on this subject, that's great. but i don't feel it would be right to name diaries here, just so some people could go to their sites and possibly say something cruel.
freedom of speech, well, it's a very tricky thing. i'm afraid that at times, this amendment to our constitution is simply a wall for people to hide behind - a wall that allows them to get their twisted beliefs out to other people - vulnerable people who will take these beliefs as truth, and self-destruct from it. is a site promoting racism simply "freedom of speech"? are hate groups ok? is writing about how to hate other races a basic privelege? is it ok to recruit other members into a lifestyle of hate? no. so why is a site that is dedicated to spreading a horrific disease any different? if you are like me, you would probably say that a journal, written by a former kkk member, who is trying to get their story out to other people to prevent such beliefs in other people from occurring, is more of a vehicle for freedom of speech than a site promoting hate, and the same goes with the proana diaries. all i want is for the word to get out about this situation, and for people to become more educated on this disease, so we as a whole can help to prevent death in young kids today. there will be a topic on my site devoted to educating the public on anorexia/bulemia, by the way.well, that will be all for now. if anyone is out there, hit me on my tagboard or the msn, and we'll chat. have a good one! xxx~ jj
by the way, guys: if there is anyone new reading, take a moment to check out the stop-pro-ana site and see what it's all about, and if you agree with our cause, sign the petition to stop pro-ana diaries from being glorified here on diaryland. thanks!1:29 p.m. - February 01, 2003
